History

The law firm, Gertler & Gertler, was founded by Judge David Gertler and his son, M. H. “Mike” Gertler in 1975. In the 1990s, Louis Gertler joined the firm and Josh Gertler joined the firm in 2010. Currently, the work done by the Gertler Law Firm, LLP is among the most prominent in New Orleans in the areas of personal injury, product liability and toxic torts.

Legal Innovators

In the state of Louisiana, the Gertler firm prosecuted some of the first asbestos personal injury suits including mesothelioma and asbestosis claims, the first silicosis suits, and the first product liability suits against respirator manufacturers.

The Gertler Law Firm also was a leader in a group of prominent Louisiana law firms that obtained a groundbreaking and unprecedented judgment against the tobacco industry, which ordered the tobacco companies to establish a $241 million cessation program for the citizens of Louisiana.

Mike and Louis Gertler were named finalists for the 2005 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award by Trial Lawyers for Public Justice for their participation in obtaining an unprecedented jury verdict ordering the tobacco industry to pay $241 million for a 10-year smoking cessation program in Louisiana.
